A Look At Brazil’s Ride Share App For Women Only

on

Sometimes it can be hard to feel comfortable as a woman. Situations that may seem completely safe and mundane to a man can cause feelings of dread for women from all walks of life. This has been the situation for women across the globe for countless years, but more and more women are taking control of their lives and finding ways to be comfortable. One of the newest examples of this is Lady Driver, an app that allows women to connect with other females to help them get from point A to point B in safety and comfort.

Rideshare apps like Uber, Grab, and Lyft have transformed the way that people travel. In many places, they are practically driving cab companies out of business because of how convenient and affordable they are. But while traditional ridesharing applications have helped to speed up the process of getting a ride many women have found that they offer imperfect solutions to their daily struggles. While these apps offer ways to grade drivers to try and help weed out bad apples there are still risks that every woman has to consider when inviting a strange man into their life.

Consider the fact that many people use these apps when they want someone to take them home safely after a night of drinking. It can be hard to trust a strange man in the best circumstances, and few women want to deal with a man they don’t know and trust when they are too inebriated to drive. Many women have found themselves asking why they can’t just request a female driver, but now a company in Brazil is offering just that.

It’s called Lady Driver. The company was founded by a Brazilian woman named Gabriela Correa, who had her own experience being harassed by drivers that she had hired to get her where she needed to go. She decided to use her personal experience and business acumen to develop an app that is for women, by women.

Security and satisfaction are top priorities for Lady Driver. Anyone who wants to drive for the company has to submit information that allows Lady Driver to confirm the gender of the driver so that the company can be sure that the drivers they hire out meet the needs of their users. It’s a delicate balancing act ensuring that women are protected without being overly burdened but so far Lady Driver is a hit with drivers and riders alike.

Lady Driver started small, but it’s growing quickly. It began in the city of San Paolo Brazil and then expanded across the country, moving to Rio de Janeiro in January of 2018 and then beyond with the addition of extra time and capital. As of writing, it’s still a Brazil-only app, and all the official documentation for the app is only available in Portuguese. But given the clear demand for the product, it feels like it’s only a matter of time before Lady Driver goes international.

The future is unknown and only time will tell whether or not Lady Driver takes over the globe. But the buzz that it has built already is proof that there is a hunger for the sort of experience that Lady Driver offers. Women deserve to be safe, and companies like Lady Driver are going a long ways towards righting historical wrongs.
