Rio de Janeiro is home to more amazing museums than we can count, and some of the very best happen to be themed around art. If you’re in the mood to explore the rich and diverse art scene of Brazil’s biggest metropolis, here are three museums that you shouldn’t miss for the world.

Niterói Contemporary Art Museum

Legendary architect Oscar Niemeyer designed some of Rio’s most stunning buildings, including the home of the Niterói Contemporary Art Museum. The spaceship-inspired exterior of this building will knock you off your feet before you even step inside, and you’ll get to discover 1,000 works of art across three floors once you’re in.

National Museum of Fine Arts

After exploring Rio’s contemporary art scene, you should also take a moment to learn more about old masters who shaped Brazil’s art history as a whole. Some of their works can be found at the National Museum of Fine Arts, which mostly houses 19th-century paintings and sculptures.

Rio Museum of Art

Museu de Arte do Rio aka MAR hasn’t been around for too long, but it’s growing into one of the city’s leading art museums. It showcases and unique mix of international and Brazilian art, that sheds the light on the people, landscapes, beauty, challenges, and conflicts of this country.

For centuries, Europe has been an arts and cultural hub, filled with architecture and museums housing paintings stemming from the height of the Renaissance. One small Meditteranean island nation that has perfectly encapsulated the continent’s artistic heritage is Malta. Here is why you should consider visiting Malta for your next arts and culture trip.

Maltabiennale.art

While home to plenty of ancient artworks, Malta has decided to host a brand new arts festival starting this year. From March 13 to May 31, this festival will see artists showcase their contemporary artworks in the backdrop of ancient sites in the capital city of Valletta along with live musical performances.

Cathedral of the Assumption

Initially the site of a prehistoric settlement, this particular building became a temple under the Roman Empire before being converted into a church. While sacked by the Ottomans in 1551, it continues to stand today. What’s particularly special about the Cathedral of the Assumption is that it continues to house remains from each of these periods, allowing you to travel through time.

MUŻA National Museum of Art

If there’s one easy place to find all of Malta’s most prized artworks, it’s the MUŻA National Museum of Art. This museum is open on Mondays and Wednesdays through Sundays from 9 AM until 5 p.m. so make sure to plan your itinerary accordingly.
