Rio de Janeiro is home to more amazing museums than we can count, and some of the very best happen to be themed around art. If you’re in the mood to explore the rich and diverse art scene of Brazil’s biggest metropolis, here are three museums that you shouldn’t miss for the world.

Niterói Contemporary Art Museum

Legendary architect Oscar Niemeyer designed some of Rio’s most stunning buildings, including the home of the Niterói Contemporary Art Museum. The spaceship-inspired exterior of this building will knock you off your feet before you even step inside, and you’ll get to discover 1,000 works of art across three floors once you’re in.

National Museum of Fine Arts

After exploring Rio’s contemporary art scene, you should also take a moment to learn more about old masters who shaped Brazil’s art history as a whole. Some of their works can be found at the National Museum of Fine Arts, which mostly houses 19th-century paintings and sculptures.

Rio Museum of Art

Museu de Arte do Rio aka MAR hasn’t been around for too long, but it’s growing into one of the city’s leading art museums. It showcases and unique mix of international and Brazilian art, that sheds the light on the people, landscapes, beauty, challenges, and conflicts of this country.

Botanical gardens are one of the most underrated tourist attractions, but nature lovers certainly can’t resist their charm. If you happen to be one of them, here are three stunning botanical gardens where you can explore the incredible biodiversity of Brazil.

Botanical Garden of São Paulo

São Paulo is home to some of Brazil’s most stunning attractions, including the enormous botanical garden that covers 400 acres. You can spend hours exploring its manicured walking trails and stumble upon many endangered plant species along the way.

Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden

If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the big city while in Rio de Janeiro, this botanical garden is your best bet. You can explore 130 acres during your visit and discover 6,500 species of flora native to Brazil, including bromeliads, cacti, carnivorous plants, and everything in between.

Botanical Garden of Curitiba

Curitiba may not be one of Brazil’s most bustling cities, but that happens to be a part of its charm. It offers a more relaxing atmosphere in comparison to Rio and São Paulo, especially if you check out its stunning botanical garden. It’s instantly recognizable thanks to its art nouveau greenhouse, but its French-style gardens and a lake are also worth exploring.

Niterói and the Museum of Tomorrow are the first places that come to mind when someone mentions museums in Brazil, but how about Inhotim? This outdoor museum is one of the largest attractions of its kind in the entire world and it offers a perfect balance between art and nature.

Inhotim is the brainchild of the former mining businessman Bernardo Paz, who transformed his 5,000-acre property into one of the largest outdoor art centers in Latin America. This museum initially only housed his personal art collection before he decided to open it to the public in 2006.

Inhotim is now home to around 500 works of art by Brazilian and international artists, with a wide range of different pavilions. The list of artists whose larger-than-life creations can be found here includes the likes of Hélio Oiticica, Yayoi Kusama, and Anish Kapoor.

Inhotim is also home to a botanical garden, which was officially opened in 2011 and houses around 5,000 different plant species.

Despite not being located in any of the major tourist hubs, with Belo Horizonte being the only major city in its proximity, Inhotim remains one of Brazil’s most popular museums and welcomes around 250,000 visitors a year.

Tickets are best bought in advance since the museum has a capacity of 5,000 visitors a day, and its doors are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

If you’re looking for a fun-filled experience to enjoy during your family trip, theme parks are a place to be. Brazil is home to quite a few amusement parks suitable for visitors of all ages, and here are three you should consider checking out in this South American country.

Hopi Hari (Vinhedo, São Paulo)

Located in close proximity to São Paulo, this amusement park is one of the most popular day trip destinations near this Brazilian metropolis.
