Built from the sand up in the 70s, Dubai is a Middle Eastern paradise that feels like a city from the future. Although filled with wonders, it’s difficult to make the most of this metropolis if you don’t know the ropes. Here are some crucial things you need to know before visiting Dubai.

Walking Isn’t An Option

This sprawling city is not pedestrian-friendly, especially when the scorching summer heat arrives. Fortunately, there are plenty of taxis and an efficient metro you can make use of, connecting you to all of the hotspots you want to visit.

Download Careem

Bought by Uber in 2020, this ride-hailing app is a necessity in Dubai. While you can hail a taxi for a cheaper fee, Careem is handy when you don’t see any taxis hanging around, ensuring that you aren’t left stranded.

Dinner Is Late

Generally, dinner is only eaten by locals in Dubai at around 10 pm. It’s important to keep this in mind if you’re heading to a restaurant so that you can book a reservation in advance. Furthermore, if you’re being hosted by locals for dinner, make sure to eat beforehand as the wait will be long.

Europe’s Schengen area is renowned for its Schengen visa that enables you to travel seamlessly from one member state to another. Six Middle Eastern Gulf nations banded together to create a similar visa, enabling you to enjoy a multinational Middle Eastern adventure. Here is what you need to know about this multi-nation visa ahead of its launch.

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), namely the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, and Qatar, came together to discuss the creation of a joint tourist visa, allowing cross-border travel for tourists between each nation.

In November 2023, the GCC’s president Sayyed Hamoud bin Faisal Al Busaidi announced that the council had agreed on the joint visa. While a date for its launch has not yet been confirmed, it’s expected for the visa to be offered later this year or perhaps in early 2025.

Currently, each GCC member holds different visa requirements. While Kuwait and Qatar offer US citizens a free visa on arrival, Saudi Arabia commands an application fee of $128. Bahrain and Oman also offer a free visa however this is only valid for two weeks. With a joint visa, you’ll be able to travel freely between each country without worrying about varying visa conditions.
