Northumberland is a county in the UK. It’s the furthest northwest region of England and is bordered by Scotland to the north. It’s a very rural and rugged part of the UK, with no cities and plenty of open moorland and wild coastline to explore. As such, it has some of the best hikes in England to suit all tastes and levels. Here are just a few of the best to try out if you are visiting the area.
Bolam Lake
This walk is perfect for a short, gentle jaunt that offers stunning views and a peaceful experience of being in nature. It’s only one mile long and circles around the beautiful lake for a relaxing and reviving hike.
Newton by Sea to Craster
A lovely circular route that follows the coast before turning inland, offering both fantastic views of the sea and the idyllic countryside. It’s just under 10 miles long in total so you’ll need to set aside plenty of time to complete it, but there are sweet towns and villages to stop off at along the way.
Alwinton Fells
This route is roughly 12 miles long and requires a decent level of fitness to complete, but the experience is well worth the effort. Once you reach the fells you’ll be rewarded with some breathtaking views and a sense of peace and freedom.
