How Mindfulness Meditation Went From New Age To Mainstream

on

The notion and practice of meditation is nothing new. In fact the act itself has been around a lot longer than most of us even realised. We’re talking over 3000 years old. Yet the practice is still relevant, more so than ever, in today’s fast paced world. Meditation is an old practice but it is now starting to become more appreciated by many individuals.

I mean how often do we hear people instructing their stressed counterparts or colleagues to relax and take a breath. Well. Isn’t that the foundation of what meditation is all about.

In recent years, the words “mindfulness meditation” have become increasingly popular and so has the practice. So what is mindful meditation and how has contemporary society made it accessible for our “switched on”, tech savvy selves.

Mindfulness is essentially a form of mediation based on the Buddhist practice of vipassana which was designed to aid us in developing the skill of paying attention to our inner and outer experiences as they occur. While this may sound a bit airy fairy to the with it millenial there is now an app ( of course there is) that can help you meditate and become more aware of your present moment – to learn acceptance, patience and compassion.

Headspace – the name of the app – is becoming increasingly popular and reviews suggest it is helping a range of different people deal with the stress and anxiety in their lives. Not bad skills or tools if you ask us. We’re off to take a break. OHM.
