Sometimes we do it out of convenience. Sometimes it’s cheaper. Sometimes we’re looking to save time. Whatever your reason, the bottom line is that sometimes we have to take a red-eye flight. And that can be hard. However, with the right approach, you can turn this journey into a productive and restful experience. Here are our favorite tips on how.
Prepare for Sleep
Treat your red-eye flight like a moving hotel room. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes and bring essentials like a sleep mask, noise-canceling headphones, and a travel pillow. Avoid caffeine and alcohol before and during the flight – they can disrupt your sleep cycle. Set your watch to your destination’s time zone and try to get some zzz-s.
Stay Hydrated and Eat Light
Airplane cabins are notoriously dry, which can lead to dehydration and discomfort. Bring an empty water bottle to fill after security and sip water throughout the flight. For meals, opt for light, easily digestible snacks like fruits, nuts, or yogurt. Heavy meals can interfere with your sleep and leave you feeling sluggish upon arrival.
Use the Time Wisely
If sleep eludes you, make the most of your awake time. Catch up on work, read a book, or watch a movie with your noise-canceling headphones. Some find this uninterrupted time perfect for brainstorming or journaling. Just remember to dim your screen to avoid disturbing fellow passengers.
