Naturally Pink Lagoon in Mexico Puts Instagram Filters to Shame

on

Mexico’s pink lagoon must be the reason and inspiration behind why Instagram was created.

You might believe at first glance that it looks photoshopped, and you may even have to do a double take, but trust us, this lagoon is completely real, and unfiltered. The lake is all natural, and there’s a perfectly logical scientific explanation as to why it looks the way it does.

The lagoon can be found in the tiny fishing village of Las Coloradas, Mexico located on the eastern coast of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula.

No, it’s not the place where fairies are born or unicorns can be found dancing under rainbows. Rather, It’s actually inhabited by the red plankton and brine shrimp. Because the lake is home to these specific creatures, they dye the water with their natural chemicals which is what makes the lagoo look so pink and dreamy. The fairytale-like landscape is also decorated with many piles of salt as Las Coloradas was once a salt mining town.

Many just spend the day at the lagoon to take unique and breathtaking pictures. But if you’re planning to stay overnight, try the Villa Pescadores – a popular hotel in the area that has an incredible view of the lagoon.

Las Colorades literally translates to “blush red” in Spanish. And while this “blush red” lagoon may not be easy to get to – a small town that is 2-3 hours away from any major city, this place is totally worth it, and will make any instagram feed stand out.
