Filled with history, tasty food, and beautiful beaches, Greece is an ideal place for a summer getaway. Still, an international trip abroad can become quite costly. Here’s your guide to visiting Greece on a budget.

Choose Your Island Wisely

Rather than heading to the party capital of Mykonos or Santorini, consider staying on an island that’s a little less visited. These islands are cheaper while still providing you with an ideal vacation. For example, Syros has tranquil beaches while Thessaloniki is filled with historical sites to explore.

Fly Budget

Although there are numerous flights headed to Greece, be aware that more options do not always equal better options. Rather than heading to your favorite flagship airline, consider a budget carrier such as PLAY Airlines, which offers flights to much of Europe including Greece. You may just save an enormous heap of money in the process.

Free Activities

You might be surprised to learn that many of the best attractions on offer in Greece are actually free to enjoy. They include touring the Acropolis in Athens, which offers free visits on numerous days throughout the year. Other great activities include a visit to the National Archaeological Museum and of course, the many golden beaches and clear blue seas.

The Acropolis of Athens is one of the most recognizable symbols of Greece, and everyone should visit it at least once in a lifetime. Like all super-touristy attractions of its kind, the Acropolis can only be fully enjoyed if you plan your visit accordingly, and our tips and tricks will help you get it done.

Perfect Timing

The Acropolis is one of those attractions where it’s impossible to avoid the crowds, but that shouldn’t stop you from trying. Its doors open at 8 a.m. so get there as early as possible, or consider an evening visit if you want to enjoy the sunset. Whichever option you choose, time your visit perfectly so you have enough time to explore the sites.

Dress Comfortably

The Acropolis doesn’t have a specific dress code, but it’s highly recommended to wear comfortable clothes and shoes and even put on a hat because you’ll be exposed to the sun at all times during the hot summer months.

Ticket Types

The tickets for the Acropolis can be bought on the spot, but it’s best to buy them in advance on the official Hellenic Heritage website. You can buy a ticket for Acropolis & Slopes for €20, but you should consider spending €30 on a combined ticket that covers some of the top historic sites in Athens, such as Ancient Agora, Roman Agora, and Hadrian’s Library.

Imagine a Greek island paradise bathed in sunshine, where the Aegean breeze whispers through cobblestone streets and the gentle clip-clop of hooves replaces the roar of traffic. This idyllic scene isn’t a dream—it’s the reality of Hydra, a car-free island gem nestled in the Saronic Gulf.

A Step Back in Time

Unlike many tourist destinations in Greece, Hydra has one very unique characteristic: a complete ban on motorized vehicles. This visionary decree, implemented in the 1950s, has preserved the island’s pristine charm and peaceful atmosphere.

Exploring Hydra’s Charms

The main town, also named Hydra, is a labyrinth of narrow alleyways, traditional stone houses with colorful doors, and blooming bougainvillea. Without cars, visitors and locals traverse the island on foot, by donkey, or by boat. This only adds to the island’s charm and laid-back atmosphere. The waterfront is lined with cafes, tavernas, and shops, offering ample opportunities to enjoy fresh seafood, local cuisine, and the art of people-watching.

Beyond the Harbor

For the more adventurous, Hydra offers a network of hiking trails. These trails will lead you past charming villages, hidden coves, and idyllic beaches.  Kayaking and boat tours are popular options for exploring the island’s coastline and discovering hidden gems like secluded bays and secluded inlets.
