Planning a trip to Iceland? Among its most breathtaking features are the countless waterfalls. These natural wonders are scattered across the country, each offering its own unique charm and awe-inspiring power. If you’re planning a trip, make sure to include these must-visit waterfalls on your itinerary.

Gullfoss

Gullfoss, also known as the “Golden Falls”, is one of Iceland’s most famous and visited waterfalls. Located in the Hvítá River canyon, Gullfoss has a two-tiered drop that plunges into a rugged gorge, creating a spectacular display of mist and rainbows on sunny days. It’s part of the famous Golden Circle route, making it easily accessible.

@ca_girl_ga Gullfoss!! Seriously one of the most amazing sights in all of Iceland. Pictures and videos can’t really do it justice. Gullfoss means Golden Falls and is part of how the Golden Circle got its name. We have visited three times now and will never get tired of seeing this magnificent sight! #iceland #goldencircle #gullfoss #ringroad #icelandringroad #icelandsouthcoast #waterfalls ♬ Inspiration (B) – The Young Ebenezers

Seljalandsfoss

Seljalandsfoss is a stunning waterfall located along the southern coast of Iceland, known for the unique path that allows you to walk behind the cascading water. It stands at about 200 feet tall. Don’t forget to bring a raincoat, to prepare for the mist of the powerful spray!

@guidetoiceland When are you planning to visit Seljalandsfoss? 📍 An advantage of visiting Seljalandsfoss during summer is that you’re able to walk behind the waterfall and experience an impressive 360 view of it 🤩 Just remember to wear waterproof outerwear! 💦 As temperatures drop, massive icicles form around the waterfall, and it turns into a true Winter Wonderland ✨❄✨ Remember to wear micro spikes under your shoes when you visit during winter 😉 Also note that, as a safety measure, the trail behind the waterfall gets closed when it’s blocked by snow, and heavy icicles may fall onto the path 🫣 #waterfallsiniceland #bestwaterfallsiniceland #iceland #icelandwaterfalls #waterfalls #topwaterfallsiniceland #waterfall #thingstodoiniceland #bestplacesiniceland #icelandtravel #amazingplacesiniceland #whattodoiniceland #icelandsights #icelandadventure #travel #foryou #foryoupage ♬ hotline bling – hellaxgay

Skógafoss

Just a short drive from Seljalandsfoss is the mighty Skógafoss, one of Iceland’s largest and most iconic waterfalls. With a width of 80 feet and a drop of 200 feet, Skógafoss creates a massive wall of water that’s powerful and mesmerizing. Climb the staircase to the top of the falls for a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape.

Iceland has one of the most unique landscapes on the planet. From volcanic fields and geothermal hot springs to massive glaciers and stunning fjords, its natural beauty is unparalleled. But that’s not all. Here are three compelling reasons to take a road trip to Iceland.

Nature Like You’ve Never Seen

The country’s famous Ring Road, or Route 1, encircles the entire island, making it possible to experience a diverse range of landscapes in just one trip. Highlights you won’t want to miss include the powerful Gullfoss waterfall, the geothermal area of Geysir, and the stunning basalt columns at Reynisfjara black sand beach.

Up Close With Wildlife

Iceland is also a fantastic place for wildlife enthusiasts. If you get lucky, you may encounter native Icelandic horses during your road trip. Whale-watching tours are also available in several parts of Iceland. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg (pun intended!) There’s so much to see.

Culture and History

There are many historical sites to visit. The Þingvellir National Park, for example, is a UNESCO World Heritage site, where you can walk between two tectonic plates and explore the birthplace of the Icelandic parliament, one of the first in the world.
