The account of a fight between husband and wife who nearly changed the outcome of World War Two has gone viral this week, after the national archives finally released covert intelligence files to the public. The story is a prime example of the butterfly effect in action. Crucially this married couple weren’t regular folks. They were deeply embedded in the world of international espionage.

Double agent Juan Pujol Garcia, codenamed Agent Garbo, managed to feed German spies a wealth of misinformation regarding the timing and location of the D-Day landings. Garbo convinced his commanding officers in Berlin that he was the leader of a tight-knit network of agents in the UK and that the June 6, 1944, landings would take place at Pas de Calais, not Normandy.

But a row with his wife Araceli Gonzalez de Pujol almost changed all that. Gonzalez allegedly hated having to live in England for the sake of her husband’s machinations, loathing the cold weather, food and isolation she experienced in the UK. Because she couldn’t speak any English, she was almost totally isolated from other people, and the nature of her spouse’s work meant that she wasn’t allowed to meet or talk with other Spaniards living in London.

But it was she who helped convince Garbo’s German masters that he was spying in England – while the couple were actually living in Portugal. It was also Gonzalez who established links with the American secret services after unimpressed British embassy officials turned down Garbo’s offer of his services.

The secrecy and subversion that controlled their lives began to have a terrible effect on Gonzalez’s mental health. She became frantically anxious, desperate to return to her homeland at any cost. One row between the two became particularly vicious. Gonzalez began screaming at Garbo that she didn’t want to live five minutes longer with her him, and announced her intention to march all the way to the Spanish embassy herself. This would have almost immediately exposed them.

Luckily Garbo was able to think fast. He concocted a false story about being arrested and imprisoned in a detention camp as a consequence of her outburst. Duped into believing this story, Gonzalez was even taken to visit him in detention. After meeting him she signed a statement saying she’d stop asking for permission to return to Spain.

It’s amazing to think that if this argument had intensified, and Garbo been interrogated, that the German army could have been more prepared for the D-Day landings, and the war could have dragged on beyond the Allies’ capacity to wage it.

Many people have been discussing over the existence of Loch Ness.  And yet, there is no final answer. However, a geneticist has a plan to find it out and put an end to the discussion once for all.

Neil Gemmell is a geneticist at the University of Otago. He is specialized in environmental DNA. Gemmell takes samples from the environment and tests the DNA found in them. Gemmell can determine which species is where by tracking their genetic info. In this way he can also trace protected species.

He wants to do with Loch Ness. And apparently, it’s easier to study the DNA with traces left in the water.  So Gemmell will collect some samples and pull the DNA (if founded), compare it to the sequences of known living things in a database, and if something come out… We’ll know Nessie exists!  That’s so exciting!

A Lie Gone Bad https://tworeddots.com/a-lie-gone-bad/ Mon, 28 Mar 2022 00:43:57 +0000 https://tworeddots.com/a-lie-gone-bad/ Sometimes, dating feels like interviewing. You sit in front of your counterpart to answer personal questions while trying to impress the other. In the meantime the woman, aka interviewer, is mentally checking boxes of her own list that includes job, relations with the family, good taste in music and others. No wonder why men tend to exaggerate, lie and make up stories to impress the girl. Often though the lies backfire at men and in the long run they get caught in their own net of lies. Watch out boys, those lies could ruin all your chances with the woman of your dreams.

Among these liars, some really went beyond anyone’s limit. Like Roger Day, 62, who convinced his wife to be a war hero. For years, she thought to be married to a brave general. She even bought him medals after he told her that his decorations got lost in action. The poor wife found out the truth when her husband attended a Remembrance Day parade wearing 17 medals on his chest. When the truth came out the man was charged under the Military Act 1955 for pretending to be a member of the armed forces. After years of marriage, Roger’s wife found out that she didn’t have a decorated war hero on her side, but a big fat liar.

When people list off how they imagine their dream flights, you’re bound to see some recurring ideas. No annoying crying babies, no one reclining their seat all the way back in the row in front of me, maybe even having a row all to myself. Recently, one Delta passenger got all he could ever dream of on a flight and more.

Steven Schneider got more than he bargained for when he boarded a plane bound for New Orleans out of Atlanta. Despite his initial worries when he showed up to an empty gate area, he stepped onto an empty plane and realized all of his fellow travelers opted to take other flights.

Before the plane took off he was asked if he’d like to travel home the next day instead, because he was the only passenger on the flight. It turns out, other passengers had found other ways home after the original flight had been delayed more than once. He broke the mold and went on to cruise on a private flight that usually seats about 160 people.

“At first I felt really bad, because I didn’t want the plane to only make the trip because of me,” he said. “But after talking to a flight attendant at the gate, she said the plane needed to go back to Atlanta anyway. She called this an empty leg flight.”

“We’re glad this customer enjoyed a somewhat rare solo experience. Other customers were accommodated on an earlier departure,” Delta said in a statement. “The reason we operated the flight was so this customer could have that airplane positioned back in Atlanta [and] so [the plane] could be in place for a departure the next day.”

“It was so cool,” Schneider said. “One of the flight attendants told me she hadn’t seen something like this in the 17 years she was here. Everyone was just so nice.”

As official vintage photographs suggest, British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) went the extra mile to ensure customer satisfaction. BOAC (the predecessor of British Airways) has developed hammock-like “skycots” for babies, traveling long-distance. If needed, these skycots would be attached to the luggage rack, allowing the infant to sleep comfortably and safely (the design of the cot prevented them from falling out). However, the child had to be held by a parent for take-off and landing; the same practice continues to this day.

Could we see the return of the hanging baby crib? Unlikely.

When news broke out that a 22-year-old backpacker had been rescued after being a hostage for two months, the focus was on the police and the horror connected to the hostage.

The British backpacker was in fact victim of rape and beatings. What we didn’t know is that the victim was saved thanks to a Servo’s worker.

Her name is Beverley Page, she is a service station owner in Queensland town. Beverley saw the girl, victim of the hostage, getting in the store shaking and very upset.

She said she had just filled her car up but she couldn’t pay for it. The worker also noticed that she had marks on her neck. The worker asked some questions about the person who was outside in the car.

She asked if he was the one who had given her those marks. So the worker said she would have called the police and the victim ran away scared of the consequences.

After a failed attempt to call the police, the worker got on her car and followed the backpacker. Thanks to her the girl was rescued. She behaved like a true hero.

Couple Travels Around the World Together https://tworeddots.com/couple-travels-around-the-world/ Tue, 22 Mar 2022 07:34:17 +0000 https://tworeddots.com/couple-travels-around-the-world/ This love story is one that is sweet and romantic. Imagine traveling around the world and meeting people you would have never met before, and becoming close with them, sounds like thr trip of a lifetime, right? Well this is the case for Rob and Joli Switzer. They are a beautiful couple with an unusual story that not many can relate to. Rob is from the United States and Joli is from the other side of the world in the Philippines. They met in Cebu City as part of a travelers’ meet up and instantly became close friends.  Because of their strong connection and love for travel, they would plan trips around meeting up with each other every few months. And, whenever they met up, they would make sure to take the same photo, one of them embracing and sharing an intimate kiss. This “dip kiss” pose idea came to them when they witnessed travel companions who had a signature pose that they would use for pictures in all of the cities that they travelled to. They wanted to do their own pose because it was cute and romantic. Originally, the couple had only shared the pictures with those closest to them. However, after sharing them on an Instagram page, they have quickly gained over 5,000 followers. The couple’s story is one of adventure and love. Finally, after two years of living in different countries, Rob proposed to Joli on a trip to Moscow and they were married in June this past year.

However, one thing is certain – airlines have to try to be as pleasant as possible for every traveler, including the babies.
